Why isn’t this on the news everywhere right now? Talking about it would bring up the long history of white racism expressed through the burning of Black churches (sometimes with people inside) and the mass media’s job is to protect, project and perpetuate the illusion of white innocence. Here the victims are Black and most likely in all these cases the arsonists are white racist. The media will do anything to avoid that conversation. However that purse snatching Black kid? Yea they’ll break into regular programming for that.

And you wonder why white people cant talk about race or racism without shorting a circuit.

I can’t help but find it amusing that conservatives think the media is a liberal mouthpiece and liberals think it’s a huge coverup machine. The media is about selling airtime and ads in newspapers, and these days, it’s becoming more and more acceptable to chase those things rather than some absolute truth (not that it was ever so virtuous). In my mind, it still comes down to: they report what the majority want to hear, and as a whole, people want to hear about shit that doesn’t upset the apple cart or, conversely, something they can be unambiguously outraged about for ten minutes to show how wonderful they are.

I know people who work in the media, and they’re neither saints nor villians - they’re people doing a job, and being dicked around by their bosses and the people who hold the purse strings.
